How did you get started into riding BMX?

There were some younger boys in my neighborhood that raced bmx bikes, and they encouraged me to go get one... so I did and started going to the race track with them. I raced for about 3 years and then realized that I didnt like to pedal all that much, so I started going to a local indoor skatepark and that was the beginning of my ramp riding... 7 years ago, wow!

You were the first girl to do a backflip. What made you do it, how many times did it take, and whats the process behind doing it.

Yes, I was the first woman in the world to ever do a backflip on a bike... I was 19 years old and was spending a couple of months in Pennsylvania at Woodward Camp.. A guy by the name of Jay Rodriguez was joking around with me one day saying that we were going to learn backflips that night... I said yeah sure whatever.. well I guess he was more serious than I thought.. so that night I started learning them into the foam pit.. I think the second try I actually got the rotation down, and within a week or so I was pulling them on the box jump. I then unleashed it at a contest there at Woodward called the CFB contest. I crashed pretty bad the first two times, but the adreneline was pumping and I was determined to pull it... the third time I pulled it. I never really thought it was that big of a deal... now that I think back on it, it is pretty cool to make history. Basically its one of the easiest tricks in the book I think.. all you have to do is commit to it... make sure you have enough speed, a good enough box jump, and just lean back, spot your landing and there ya go!

What other sports do you enjoy doing then?

I really enjoy snowboarding in the winter and occassionally mt. biking... I also like to play around on skateboards. I grew up riding a skateboard so its always fun.

What was it like to be one of the only female riders in a male dominated
sport?

Well when I was younger, I never really realized I was the only girl at the skatepark. As the years went on, I thought it was pretty cool. I could keep up with the guys, and the guy to girl ratio was obviously in my favor. haha

Besides yourself, there are a number of other female rider who have really
made some headway in pushing the sport for the girls. What do you think
about the women's scene as a whole?

I think that it is def. growing which is awesome.. and I am seeing more and more events that are including womens categories which is pretty awesome. A few years ago that was unheard of...

What women riders come to mind and what are your thoughts on your
competitive opponents?

Thats one thing that I dont enjoy is competitiveness... thats what I didnt like about racing... I just look at it as me riding my bike having a good time, traveling the world, and meeting new people.

Is it competitive among the girls, or is it more of a friendship?

I think there are def. some people out there that are competitive, but that comes with any sport. I know a lot of the girls are just like me and are just excited to see other girls riding.

Where do you see the future of women's BMX going?

Honestly, who knows. the world is endless in opportunities, and if we keep pushing the limits, it could be just like any other sport.

Do other female athletes from other sports inspire you? If so, who?

Yes, I am always inspiried by other women athletes... Aimee Mullins is a para olympic athlete that is more than amazing... her courage, strength, and her just being who she is pushes me. I think that the free skier Sarah Burke is awesome.. Lisa Whittaker in skateboarding is really awesome, along with Cara-beth Burnside in skating and snowboarding.

What else do you do besides riding BMX - hobbies, activites, travels?

I love to hang out with friends, go to the beach, hike, eat food. Traveling is such an awesome thing as well.. I love going to new places and meeting people, experiencing different cultures/food.

Do you have a favorite movie star or movie?

I have a few favorite movies... Vanilla Sky, Donnie Darko, and the Winged Migration.

Who are your favorite bands / singers?

BoySetsFire, The Spill Canvas, and Jose Gonzalez.

Where is your favorite place to travel to and why?

Probably the coolest place I've ever been was Africa... I really want to go back there.. so much stuff to do, beautiful scenery, amazing people, and just one of the greatest places on earth!!

What did you want to be when you were growing up (besides a pro rider)?

I've always wanted to be a housewife. I'm also currently completing my Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Administration Technology at Cal State Los Angeles.

Do you have any words for all the girls out there reading this?

If you want something in life, go and get it. Practice really does make perfect. Don't ever let anyone or anything stand in the way of your dreams!

1. The Park - Take your dog for a walk in the park.

3. Skateboarding - When my kids were younger, they took our male German shepherd with them and he pulled them on their skateboards. It was fun for them and exercise for him. Actually some dogs can learn to ride skateboards themselves.

4. Swimming - Take your dog along when you go swimming. Almost all dogs love the water. Great fun and exercise for both you and your dog.

5. Tricks - Teach your dog some tricks. Teach him to "Speak," "Shake hands," "Fetch," "Jump through hoops," "Kiss," "Roll over," "Beg," "Play Dead," "Dance," etc.

6. Playtime - Have playtime set up each day so you and your dog can have some fun together. Get out his toys and run and rump with him. This is a great time to play Frisbee, where he can run and play in the safety of the fenced in backyard.

7. 4-H Groups - Join a 4-H group. Show your dog at the 4-H Fairs.

8. Agility - Try agility with your dog, Good Canine Citizen, fly ball, or obedience.

9. AKC Shows - If your dog is AKC registered, try showing him in a real show, or Fun match.

10. Camping - Take your dog camping with you and on your hikes. It's exercise and protection.

Just remember, you may think your dog is completely fine off leash, but it only takes a minute of distraction at the wrong time; like seeing another dog or cat, and that could be enough for him to start the chase. Your dog could get lost or hurt, (or worse). It's much better to keep him on a leash at all times for his safety when you are out and about.

The first thing that comes to mind in the lines of early recreation was of course the bike. This for all practical purposes was really the only other form of transportation besides walking that we had as kids in order to get to where we wanted to go. Do you remember those days? Bikes back then were pretty simple with only one speed and the ole back peddle braking system. They did eventually come out with the 3 speed which was really exciting for us. Some even had the new handle bar brake levers. After that, about the only other real excitement was when they introduced the banana seat. That was cool as you could ride two people much easier and more comfortable. We also put the baseball cards on the frame with a clothes pin so that the spokes hit it and made noise. We thought that was awesome. Compare that to what's available now a days. I don't even know how many speeds they go up to anymore. Now you can get the BMX bikes, stunt bikes, speed bikes, mountain bikes and touring bikes with a wide variety of options.

The next thing that hit the scene back in my day was roller skates. They were made to fit on your shoes with a strap to hold the back on to your foot and a set of adjustable clamps that one would adjust with a special key to clamp to the front of the shoe. They also had a slot in the middle with a screw that could be loosened to slide the front and rear wheels apart to make the skates longer or shorter, depending on the shoe size. These incredibly enough worked quite well and we really got some use out of them. I also got some scuffed up knees, elbows and hands falling on the cement sidewalks. It was worth it though.

It wasn't too long after that when the first skate boards came about. Once we saw these, but we didn't have the money to buy one, it didn't take long to cure that desire ourselves. We simple took our old skates apart in the middle so we had the front wheels and back separated and grabbed an ole 2x4 laying around and attached the wheels to it with some nails or screws. Believe it or not, these homemade boards were loads of fun, but a little more dangerous than the skates themselves. No, we didn't have helmets back then and to this day I don't know how there weren't more serious head injuries, at least not in my neighborhood. Have you noticed how skateboarding has developed into quite a competitive sport? If you have ever seen the X-Games on TV, then you know that the things people do now a days with skateboards are amazing. They have all the special ramps and
equipment which they use to really put on quite a show. You have probably heard the names Tony Hawk or Bob Bernstein at some point in time as they are two of the top competition skateboarders.

As a few years pasted, it didn't take long before these self powered forms of transportation were getting old. We wanted something that had it's own power. It was also around this time that some companies started producing go carts. Once we caught wind of this, everybody wanted to have one. The ones you could purchase came in two forms. Already assembled or in a kit that you had to put together. The kits were less costly and you could buy them with or without a motor, but it took the time and skill to assemble them. One of the kids down the block came tooling by one day in a go-cart as his grandpa had purchased a kit, assembled it and painted it for him. Oh yeah, we were jealous and knew we had to come up with something. My one good friend's dad had just bought a new lawn mower and he still had the old one in the garage. It was the ole reel type mower. It had a Briggs & Stratton 2-1/2 horse power engine with a horizontal shaft which was exactly what you needed for a go cart. We grabbed our hammers and some scrap pieces of 2x4 and plywood and put together a real simple frame.

The steering actually was nothing more than just a couple of 2x4's perpendicular to each other with a bolt through them and a rope attached to the ends of the one with the front tires mounted on it. You pulled the rope to make the front wheels turn right or left. Very simple indeed but it worked. We took the pulley system off the mower and used it as a way to engage and power one of the rear wheels. We used everything off that mower, tires, engine, gears and pulleys, belts, chain and sprockets. We managed to get a cart up and running. It didn't look as nice as the other neighbor kids but if was faster which made up for the looks. We ran this thing for a couple of good years and had a ball with it. With that being said, I have to admit that not too long ago I built a frame with steel tubing, found a motor, centrifugal clutch and everything else I needed and put together a pretty nice cart for my son.

So what happened next? The neighbor kid up the street got a mini bike from his dad. The go-cart was no longer cool. I had to have a mini bike. I even bought plans for one that you could build, supposedly easy. What about the recreational vehicles of now a days? The BIG thing that comes to mind is the invasion of the scooter. Sure they too originated from the past. The self-propelled two wheel foot scooter has been around for a while. But, for the newer generation, they have added electric and gas power to these babies. We bought an electric one for our son and I must say I wish I would of had this option when I was a kid. They are fun.

But as time goes on, so does ones desire to find something new. Another of todays big hits to come about is the 3 and 4 wheelers. There were a lot of accidents and injuries with the instability of the 3 wheelers and they have pretty much disappeared from the scene due to regulations and laws. The 4-wheeler, is still going strong and very popular. Yes, my son would like one of these too. I don't know as of this writing, if this is in his future or not, lol.

Who knows what the future holds in the lines of recreational toys, but with all the latest technology and growing electronic accomplishments, I'm sure they will be quite different from anything I have had in the past. What have you done or what are you currently doing in the lines of recreational toys and fun?

Given all the choices, which one is best for you or your loved one?

Over the past several years, I have made a living selling Razor Scooters. Based on my experience, here are my recommendations:

By far, the most popular model we sell is the Razor "Pro Model" Scooter. The "Pro Model" is well designed, is sturdy, looks cool and can take a beating. This scooter was designed by the Razor Team riders themselves, so it's built for stunt and trick riding. This scooter is for more advanced riders aged nine on up, though the manufacturer says the scooter is fine for kids as young as five.

Beginners should start with the "A" Scooter which closely resembles the original Razor scooter from 2000. It's portable, easy to ride and comes in a variety of colors like Red, Black, Green, Blue and even Pink. It's also very inexpensive - never more than $30. Variations on this scooter include the "A2" and "A3". The "A2" includes a wheelie bar so riders can begin performing stunts and can add a bit more variety to their riding. The "A3" is like the "A2" except it has shocks on the front wheel and larger 125mm wheels - it's sort of the Cadillac of the A series Razor Scooters. These scooters are for kids five and up according to the manufacturer. There is also the Purple "A2" Scooter for those looking for a truly unique ride.

For toddlers, Razor makes the "Kiddie Kick" Scooter which has three wheels and is made for four to five year olds who want to familiarize themselves with the world of kick scooting. Because it has three wheels, it's easy to stand on so kids don't need to have fully developed balancing skills to ride it.

For the latest in new scooting technology, there is the Razor "PowerWing" which has suddenly become very popular as it represents another twist on the evolution in asphalt recreation that has come to dominate urban landscapes since the invention of the skateboard in the 1960's. You've probably seen the commercials for the "PowerWing" on TV, but if not, you can do a search on YouTube and find a copy there. The "PowerWing" is still so new that kids are figuring out how to turn it into a stunt riding apparatus; no doubt we'll see some interesting tricks performed on it in the coming months. The "PowerWing" is good for kids aged six and up.

The "Carvr" scooter is a very weird hybrid between a skateboard and a scooter. It's barely worth mentioning in my opinion since it's not a good seller at all and it really looks like a mutant "scootboard" that should be put out of its misery - fast. No doubt RazorUSA will discontinue this item some time in the near future.

What about teenage and adult riders?

Again, the Pro Model scooter is the most popular young adult scooter that we sell since it has become a kind of urban phenomenon that rivals both skateboarding and BMX. The stunts riders perform on this unit are really amazing and there are hundreds of YouTube videos out there to prove it - a small fraction of which are on our web site. Because of its broad appeal, the "Pro Model" Scooter is a great ride for kids young and old - even college kids use it as a commuter vehicle between classes.

If your interest is primarily transportation, then you'll want to check out Razor's line of larger scooters - the "Cruiser" Scooter and the "A5 Luxe" Scooter. The "Cruiser" Scooter is cool because its larger wooden deck gives it a classic feel and can accommodate bigger feet. It also has larger 140mm wheels giving it a bit more height.

The "A5 Luxe" Scooter with 200mm wheels is by far the closest thing Razor has to a push commuter vehicle. We just started selling this scooter and already we've seen it gain traction quickly. Even I want one! I'm sure we'll see this scooter pop up across campuses and even office parks nationwide in coming months. It's easy to carry and because it's foldable, it can be taken on the subway and even right up the elevator. Once Razor adds the cup holder, you may just want to ditch your car.

You pulled the rope to make the front wheels turn right or left. Very simple indeed but it worked. We took the pulley system off the mower and used it as a way to engage and power one of the rear wheels. We used everything off that mower, tires, engine, gears and pulleys, belts, chain and sprockets. We managed to get a cart up and running. It didn't look as nice as the other neighbor kids but if was faster which made up for the looks. We ran this thing for a couple of good years and had a ball with it. With that being said, I have to admit that not too long ago I built a frame with steel tubing, found a motor, centrifugal clutch and everything else I needed and put together a pretty nice cart for my son.

So what happened next? The neighbor kid up the street got a mini bike from his dad. The go-cart was no longer cool. I had to have a mini bike. I even bought plans for one that you could build, supposedly easy. What about the recreational vehicles of now a days? The BIG thing that comes to mind is the invasion of the scooter. Sure they too originated from the past. The self-propelled two wheel foot scooter has been around for a while. But, for the newer generation, they have added electric and gas power to these babies. We bought an electric one for our son and I must say I wish I would of had this option when I was a kid. They are fun.

But as time goes on, so does ones desire to find something new. Another of todays big hits to come about is the 3 and 4 wheelers. There were a lot of accidents and injuries with the instability of the 3 wheelers and they have pretty much disappeared from the scene due to regulations and laws. The 4-wheeler, is still going strong and very popular. Yes, my son would like one of these too. I don't know as of this writing, if this is in his future or not, lol.

Who knows what the future holds in the lines of recreational toys, but with all the latest technology and growing electronic accomplishments, I'm sure they will be quite different from anything I have had in the past. How did you get started into riding BMX?

There were some younger boys in my neighborhood that raced bmx bikes, and they encouraged me to go get one... so I did and started going to the race track with them. I raced for about 3 years and then realized that I didnt like to pedal all that much, so I started going to a local indoor skatepark and that was the beginning of my ramp riding... 7 years ago, wow!

You were the first girl to do a backflip. What made you do it, how many times did it take, and whats the process behind doing it.

Yes, I was the first woman in the world to ever do a backflip on a bike... I was 19 years old and was spending a couple of months in Pennsylvania at Woodward Camp.. A guy by the name of Jay Rodriguez was joking around with me one day saying that we were going to learn backflips that night... I said yeah sure whatever.. well I guess he was more serious than I thought.. so that night I started learning them into the foam pit.. I think the second try I actually got the rotation down, and within a week or so I was pulling them on the box jump. I then unleashed it at a contest there at Woodward called the CFB contest. I crashed pretty bad the first two times, but the adreneline was pumping and I was determined to pull it... the third time I pulled it. I never really thought it was that big of a deal... now that I think back on it, it is pretty cool to make history. Basically its one of the easiest tricks in the book I think.. all you have to do is commit to it... make sure you have enough speed, a good enough box jump, and just lean back, spot your landing and there ya go!

What other sports do you enjoy doing then?

I really enjoy snowboarding in the winter and occassionally mt. biking... I also like to play around on skateboards. I grew up riding a skateboard so its always fun.

What was it like to be one of the only female riders in a male dominated
sport?

Well when I was younger, I never really realized I was the only girl at the skatepark. As the years went on, I thought it was pretty cool. I could keep up with the guys, and the guy to girl ratio was obviously in my favor. haha

Besides yourself, there are a number of other female rider who have really
made some headway in pushing the sport for the girls. What do you think
about the women's scene as a whole?

I think that it is def. growing which is awesome.. and I am seeing more and more events that are including womens categories which is pretty awesome. A few years ago that was unheard of...

What women riders come to mind and what are your thoughts on your
competitive opponents?

Thats one thing that I dont enjoy is competitiveness... thats what I didnt like about racing... I just look at it as me riding my bike having a good time, traveling the world, and meeting new people.

Is it competitive among the girls, or is it more of a friendship?

I think there are def. some people out there that are competitive, but that comes with any sport. I know a lot of the girls are just like me and are just excited to see other girls riding.

Where do you see the future of women's BMX going?

Honestly, who knows. the world is endless in opportunities, and if we keep pushing the limits, it could be just like any other sport.

Do other female athletes from other sports inspire you? If so, who?

Yes, I am always inspiried by other women athletes... Aimee Mullins is a para olympic athlete that is more than amazing... her courage, strength, and her just being who she is pushes me. I think that the free skier Sarah Burke is awesome.. Lisa Whittaker in skateboarding is really awesome, along with Cara-beth Burnside in skating and snowboarding.

What else do you do besides riding BMX - hobbies, activites, travels?

I love to hang out with friends, go to the beach, hike, eat food. Traveling is such an awesome thing as well.. I love going to new places and meeting people, experiencing different cultures/food.

Do you have a favorite movie star or movie?

I have a few favorite movies... Vanilla Sky, Donnie Darko, and the Winged Migration.

Who are your favorite bands / singers?

BoySetsFire, The Spill Canvas, and Jose Gonzalez.

Where is your favorite place to travel to and why?

Probably the coolest place I've ever been was Africa... I really want to go back there.. so much stuff to do, beautiful scenery, amazing people, and just one of the greatest places on earth!!

What did you want to be when you were growing up (besides a pro rider)?

I've always wanted to be a housewife. I'm also currently completing my Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Administration Technology at Cal State Los Angeles.

Do you have any words for all the girls out there reading this?

If you want something in life, go and get it. Practice really does make perfect. Don't ever let anyone or anything stand in the way of your dreams!

Always go swimming in the summer. Swimming and snowboarding don't generally go down together so take full advantage. It's a nice low-impact exercise that will only strengthen the muscles you use to snowboard and may even aid in recuperating injuries you didn't know were there! Don't forget to break out that tanning oil and re-introduce sunlight to the parts of your body that have been covered in snowboard outerwear for the last couple of months (this is really important, just ask Lauri Heiskari!)

Pick up an alternative boardsport of some kind. Some people skateboard, some people wakeboard, some people surf. Grab an old skateboard, find a trampoline and start trying tricks (I bought a huge trampoline off PennySaver for $40). Not into that stuff or just too busy? No excuse! Find an old skateboard deck or something similar and buy a 2 liter of soda... now you've got yourself a balance board. Do yourself a favor and improve your legs, your balance, and orientation (knowing where the board is). You can't afford to stay off a board this summer if you want to be pulling all those steezy inverts you were landing last season!

Speaking of inverts... and trampolines, if you don't have one find one. Like I said I found one very cheap on PennySaver, some folks can't wait for the extra lawn space! Trampolines are a really good way to familiarize yourself with this thing in snowboarding called airtime, not to mention you should not even think about going inverted until you can flip about on a trampoline. If you still aren't sold, then how about the aerobic exercise and the fact that you will have spring loaded jumping legs after a summer with your trampoline? Seriously, and especially if you are serious about snowboarding, pick up a trampoline. It is incredibly useful tool.

Other than that you could go extreme-snowboard-jock status. You know, hit the gym and benchpress a couple hundred pounds then enjoy a nice Big Gulp sized protein shake. Actually lifting heavy weights is incredible waste of time. Heavy weights accustom your muscles to very slow controlled movement. Snowboarding is the complete opposite of slow and controlled. You want to be quick and agile... like Terje Haakonsen the "sprocking cat". You are better off just doing some push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups and then go skating or what have you for your aerobic workout. Don't forget about swimming!

The first thing that comes to mind in the lines of early recreation was of course the bike. This for all practical purposes was really the only other form of transportation besides walking that we had as kids in order to get to where we wanted to go. Do you remember those days? Bikes back then were pretty simple with only one speed and the ole back peddle braking system. They did eventually come out with the 3 speed which was really exciting for us. Some even had the new handle bar brake levers. After that, about the only other real excitement was when they introduced the banana seat. That was cool as you could ride two people much easier and more comfortable. We also put the baseball cards on the frame with a clothes pin so that the spokes hit it and made noise. We thought that was awesome. Compare that to what's available now a days. I don't even know how many speeds they go up to anymore. Now you can get the BMX bikes, stunt bikes, speed bikes, mountain bikes and touring bikes with a wide variety of options.

The next thing that hit the scene back in my day was roller skates. They were made to fit on your shoes with a strap to hold the back on to your foot and a set of adjustable clamps that one would adjust with a special key to clamp to the front of the shoe. They also had a slot in the middle with a screw that could be loosened to slide the front and rear wheels apart to make the skates longer or shorter, depending on the shoe size. These incredibly enough worked quite well and we really got some use out of them. I also got some scuffed up knees, elbows and hands falling on the cement sidewalks. It was worth it though.

It wasn't too long after that when the first skate boards came about. Once we saw these, but we didn't have the money to buy one, it didn't take long to cure that desire ourselves. We simple took our old skates apart in the middle so we had the front wheels and back separated and grabbed an ole 2x4 laying around and attached the wheels to it with some nails or screws. Believe it or not, these homemade boards were loads of fun, but a little more dangerous than the skates themselves. No, we didn't have helmets back then and to this day I don't know how there weren't more serious head injuries, at least not in my neighborhood. Have you noticed how skateboarding has developed into quite a competitive sport? If you have ever seen the X-Games on TV, then you know that the things people do now a days with skateboards are amazing. They have all the special ramps and
equipment which they use to really put on quite a show. You have probably heard the names Tony Hawk or Bob Bernstein at some point in time as they are two of the top competition skateboarders.

As a few years pasted, it didn't take long before these self powered forms of transportation were getting old. We wanted something that had it's own power. It was also around this time that some companies started producing go carts. Once we caught wind of this, everybody wanted to have one. The ones you could purchase came in two forms. Already assembled or in a kit that you had to put together. The kits were less costly and you could buy them with or without a motor, but it took the time and skill to assemble them. One of the kids down the block came tooling by one day in a go-cart as his grandpa had purchased a kit, assembled it and painted it for him. Oh yeah, we were jealous and knew we had to come up with something. My one good friend's dad had just bought a new lawn mower and he still had the old one in the garage. It was the ole reel type mower. It had a Briggs & Stratton 2-1/2 horse power engine with a horizontal shaft which was exactly what you needed for a go cart. We grabbed our hammers and some scrap pieces of 2x4 and plywood and put together a real simple frame.
